ASA tile adhesives

ASA Fixall-Technical Data Sheet

By  Last updated: 4th September 2010

ASA Fixall is a rigid set, high quality cement based adhesive suitable for most types of ceramic wall and
floor tiles including monocottura, slate, terracotta, quarry and natural stone tiles. ASA Fixall is suitable
for thin and thick bed applications onto rigid substrates only. To produce a resilient adhesive with
improved adhesion, flexural and compressive strength mix with ASA Megalastic or ASA Mortafix as a
total water replacement.
• No odour
• Economical
• Easy to clean
• Easy to spread
• Thick and thin bed applications
1NOTE: ASA Megalastic or ASA Mortafix must be used as a total water replacement.
All surfaces must be clean, dry, free from dust, grease, wax, oil, laitance, curing compounds, paint, friable material and all other
contaminants likely to prevent the adhesive bonding. Cement render/screeds must be allowed to cure for 7 days, concrete to be
left with a wood float finish and allowed to cure for at least 28 days before tiling. Smooth steel trowel finished concrete must be
mechanically abraided to increase adhesion. Highly porous substrates should be primed with ASA Multiprime prior to tiling. Non
absorbent/impervious substrates must not be primed.
Movement joints must be incorporated at the design stage and in accordance with AS3958.1-2007.
20kg of ASA Fixall powder requires approximately 5 litres of water which produces 14 litres of mixed product. Add a measured
amount of clean water into a clean container and sprinkle ASA Fixall powder slowly into the liquid with constant stirring. Eliminate
lumps. Mix to a thick toothpaste consistency. Allow to stand for 2 minutes then remix. The adhesive is now ready to use. ASA
Megalastic or ASA Mortafix must be used as a total water replacement, in areas subject to vibration, thermal fluctuation, expansion
or contraction, and immersed applications. Recommended for tiling over ASA/Bostik approved waterbased waterproofing
membranes only when mixed with undiluted ASA Megalastic.
All workmanship must be carried out in accordance with AS3958.1- 2007.
Apply the mixed adhesive to the prepared substrate using the appropriate notched trowel for the size of the tile being laid.
A minimum of 1mm bed thickness for walls and a minimum of 3mm for floors must be achieved. Ensure that the tiles are fully
supported by the adhesive with no voids. Do not spread more than 1m2 of ASA Fixall at a time. Lay tiles into the adhesive before
it skins. Do not disturb tiles until the adhesive has set.
Allow a minimum of 24 hours for the adhesive to set (or when tile work is firm) prior to allowing foot traffic or grouting. Do not tile
if temperatures are likely to drop to below 5°C or exceed 30°C. For temperatures below 20°C allow the adhesive to cure for an
extended period of time. If uncertain check to see if the adhesive has set before allowing foot traffic or grouting.
Use the appropriate ASA grout with ASA Grout Additive as a total water replacement when tiling over flexible substrates. Allow
joint widths of 1.5mm to 5mm for walls and 3mm to 15mm for floors as per AS3958.1-2007. Thoroughly clean the surface of the
tiles to remove all residue prior to the grout and Grout Additive drying.
ASA Fixall can be removed from the surface of the tiles using a damp cloth while the adhesive is still wet. Tools and equipment
can be cleaned with warm water and detergent prior to the adhesive drying.
20kg paper bags.
2.5 hours at 22°C and 50%RH Setting time: 24 hours at 22°C and 50%RH
3kg of powder per m² using a 6mm x 6mm notched trowel and 6kg of powder per m² using a 12mm x 12mm notched trowel.

Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid breathing dust. Wear overalls, safety shoes, impervious gloves and chemical goggles.
Use only in well ventilated areas. If inhalation risk exists wear dust respirator. No smoking. Avoid contact with foodstuffs, and
sources of heat and ignition. Wash hands thoroughly after use. Store in a cool place and out of direct sunlight. Store away from
oxidising agents. Do not empty into drains.
Irritating to eyes, respiratory system and skin. Risk of serious damage to eyes. Harmful: danger of serious damage to health by
prolonged exposure through inhalation.
If poisoning occurs, contact a Doctor or Poisons Information Centre (Phone Australia: 131126, New Zealand: 0800 764 766).
SWALLOWED: If swallowed, do NOT induce vomiting. Immediately give a glass of water. First aid is not generally required.
If in doubt, contact a Poisons Information Centre or a doctor.
EYE: Immediately irrigate with copious amount of water for 15 minutes. Eyelids to be held open. Urgently seek medical advice.
SKIN: If skin or hair contact occurs, flush skin and hair with running water (and soap if available). Seek medical attention in
event of irritation.
INHALED: If fumes or combustion products are inhaled remove from contaminated area. Other measures are usually
unnecessary. Seek medical advice if in doubt.
Unopened bags can be stored for up to 12 months in a cool, dry and weatherproof environment. Bags must be stored off
the floor.
• Not suitable for tiling over flexible substrates, such as fibrous cement sheeting, plasterboard and timber.
• Not suitable for tiling directly onto timber, plywood or particleboard.
Not suitable for tiling over waterproofing membranes unless it is an ASA or Bostik approved product.
Not suitable for tiling directly on to metals or plastic substrates.
Not suitable for tiling directly onto polyurethane waterproofing membranes, contact ASA for further information.
Not suitable for impervious tiles.
Not suitable for moisture sensitive tiles or stone.
Do not mix or apply adhesives in temperatures below 5oC and above 30oC and under extreme hot and windy conditions.
